Preparing your child for a successful future career is at the heart of what we do. Part of that is giving them real world experiences, including work placements that help them develop the skills employers are looking for.
Placements are an integral part of student learning at ÉëÒ÷Ö®Íõ and students have the option of undertaking some form of work experience across all courses.
We have strong links with local, national and international employers to give students essential work experience to prepare them for the graduate job market.
Placements are year-long, paid positions with an organisation. They usually take place after your child has completed
their first and second year of their degree, and before they return for their final year, making their degree a
four-year course.
For most courses, a placement year is optional. For others, such as our nursing courses, placements are an integral
part of the course and students spend 50 per cent of their time on placement.
Some of our Allied Health courses and Education Studies also have mandatory placements but these might be for a number
of days or weeks, rather than a full year.
They provide a huge boost to students’ career prospects by giving them invaluable professional experience. They often
lead to the offer of a graduate job or fast-tracked recruitment from the placement employer.
Every faculty has a specialist placement team to help students find placements with a wide range of industries and
organisations. In the past, students have been placed with Rolls-Royce, Pfizer, NHS, Leicestershire Police, EA Games,
Hewlett Packard, Next, The Walt Disney Company, Tommy Hilfiger, Airbus, and IBM among many others.
Students have a specialist placement team to support them during their placement, from beginning preparations in the
first year to returning to ÉëÒ÷Ö®Íõ for their final year. They also have a Placement Tutor who will help them get the most
out of the experience and ensure that they are on track with the academic requirements.
The placement year cost is £1,850 (fees may be subject to change). For UK-based placements you can expect most
employers to pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
Students retain their student status during the placement year so they are still eligible for student concession
rates and benefits. If eligible, they can apply for student finance during the placement year, although they may be
entitled to less than they would receive in a standard study year.
Salary conditions for international placements will vary and it’s important students double check these details and
assess the full costs before starting on the placement. Students may be eligible for a Turing Scheme grant if working
abroad.
