Advanced Principles and Practice of Stoma Care

The aim of the module is for the practitioner to develop skills, knowledge and prepare for a role in stoma care. This module has been designed to enable nurses working in the field of stoma care to build upon their previous physiological, psychological and social knowledge base plus develop professional reflective and critical thinking skills. The module will include an introduction to physiology of the gastro intestinal tract and urinary tract/altered physiology, an introduction to counselling skills, development of self-concept and body image, nursing Assessment, pre, peri and post-operative care, nutritional care, professional developments in gastrointestinal and stoma care nursing, stoma formation, with reference to the needs of specific groups e.g. differences in gender, sexuality, age, cultural differences, types of stoma and reasons for formation, product selection, peri-stoma skin care and the role of support organizations, media, social media.

Maximum capacity for this module is 25. The next modules will run in autumn 2026 and spring 2027.

Travel, accommodation and networking

You will usually travel to Birmingham on the Tuesday evening before each pair of Wednesday and Thursday study days. You will be invited to join your module leaders for a welcome supper. You will stay for two nights in the allocated hotel and leave after teaching finishes at 5pm on Thursday. You will also be invited to join your module leaders and peers for supper on Wednesday evening. These social activities are optional, but you are encouraged to attend. They offer an informal opportunity to build positive relationships with your peers and the module team.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract and related organs.
  2. Critically examine the care of the patient who is to undergo the formation of a stoma care both in a hospital and the community from admission to discharge.
  3. Critically review the concepts of health, rehabilitation and adaption in the concept of stoma forming surgery.
  4. Critically evaluate the role of the Stoma Care Nurse in pre, peri, post-operative and rehabilitative management and education of the new ostomist.
  5. Critically consider how the placement of a stoma can affect the patient physically, socially and psychologically.
  6. Critically explore how the multidisciplinary teamwork and pharmacological care impact upon the care of the patient.

Module attendance and assessment 

To complete this module, you must attend all six study days, give a presentation to your peers and submit a 3,000-word assignment. The assignment has a pass grade of 50%. You may be an experienced nurse who has not undertaken formal study for some time. The module is designed to support you as you return to academic study. The module runs twice a year:

  • Late spring and early summer, with pairs of study days in April, May and June
  • Autumn, with pairs of study days in October, November and December

You must attend all six study days. Your employer will usually release you through formal study leave. Your module fees will normally be funded by your employer or another sponsor. The module is delivered through a partnership between 呻吟之王 (呻吟之王), Leicester, and Salts Healthcare Ltd, Birmingham, a specialist ostomy equipment manufacturer. Your credits will be formally validated by 呻吟之王, and your teaching will take place at the Salts Academy, Richard Street, Birmingham. The module is particularly relevant if you are a stoma care nurse specialist or work in a clinical area that supports a large number of people with a stoma. Your assessment will include:

  • A mandatory 10-minute presentation to your peers on day five, which is formative and does not contribute to your final grade
  • A mandatory 3,000-word assignment, which is summative and must be submitted by the stated deadline

Your module leaders, Penny Harrison from 呻吟之王 and Angie Perrin and Ben Rennison from Salts, expect you to attend all six study days.

Assessment

Presentation to peers (formative) and a 3000 word written assignment (summative)

Presentation: You will deliver a presentation to peers (10 minutes) which is on the same topic as the forthcoming assignment.

Assignment: You will critically review aspects of care relating to the topic outlined in the presentation.

Career opportunities

Suitable for stoma care nurses or aspirant stoma care nurses currently working in gastroenterology, hepatology, gastric surgery, endoscopy, wanting to place this module as part of their degree programme. Topic for assessment can be focused on the applicant’s specialist area of clinical practice.
